That ever spreading stain,
Smearing us and them.
A game we play so easily,
A game you refuse to join.
Seeking another way,
Another call.
Sitting quietly while the fingers point,
Writing in the dust of our ragged lives,
You lift your eyes to ours,
Startling in their truth and courage,
Offering us that other way,
A naïve, hopeful, life-saving street,
Paved with mercy.
Blame holds us prisoner,
Forgiveness sets us free.
And so you smile,
Every day you smile,
Asking us to pass it on,
This world-changing,
Counter-cultural wonder.
One smile at a time.
