Good Shepherd & Worry Beads

Good Shepherd

How we need a good shepherd,
The kind of shepherd who will give everything for his sheep,
strong, kind, understanding,
gentle and powerful,
selfless and courageous,
unafraid of the dark and the mud of our lives.
The kind of shepherd who will stick by us through thick and thin,
The kind of shepherd who knows my name and yours,
The kind of shepherd who will search high and low for us,
The kind of shepherd who can lead us through the valleys,
The kind of shepherd who can inspire and empower us,
And protect us in the storms.

Worry Beads

Did little Gideon feel the sweat beading on his forehead
as the angel said, ‘God has a job for you mighty man!’?
Did Esther sense it beneath the layers of make-up
as she risked her life and stood before the king?
Did Ruth feel the worry coursing in her veins
as she trudged alongside Naomi into the unknown?
And did the disciples experience that feeling as they took
those meagre crumbs to the crowd of thousands?
We may or not feel those beads of sweat,
but we know what it is to worry,
to carry stress as we face the latest problem.
Jesus certainly knew this as he knelt in the darkness,
And the beads of blood streaked his face.
Our God is not distant.
He understands.
