Die Hard

John McClane flies home to LA from New York to see his wife Holly who is attending an office Christmas party. John is a cop from New York and he very quickly discovers that the Nakatomi Plaza (where the party is being held) has been invaded by terrorists, so he has to do his level best – one man with bare feet against a whole bunch of corrupt villains. There’s a lot of debate about whether this is really a Christmas movie, but it is set on Christmas Eve and there is Christmas music playing in the background at times. Also, John McClane is a man battling for justice and peace while the bad guys are fuelled by greed and corruption.
Many of the prophecies in the Old Testament about the promised Messiah talk of someone coming to bring justice and truth and peace. In Isaiah chapter 9 the Messiah is described like this – ‘A child is born to us, a son is given to us, and the government will rest on his shoulders. He will be called wonderful counsellor, mighty God, everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace. This is the coming Messiah – the man of justice, the man of love and grace. Jesus was born into an oppressed and invaded country, the Romans were there and people hated them. Life was hard and frightening, and many people were not well off. They were struggling and so were longing for someone who would rescue them from this situation. Someone who would deliver them from all that –  a man of integrity, a man of kindness and truth, someone they could trust. And this is the promise of Christmas. The world is still a very difficult and painful place, but the promised Messiah stepped into that, not shunning the hurt and the challenges. And everything began with Mary saying her yes, and Jesus being born for us.

God became human and lived here on earth among us. He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness. John 1 v 14
