He didn’t stay a baby, didn’t instantly grow up,
First became a toddler, grasping, reaching up.
Think of all those tools in old Joseph’s shed –
Joe now needs eyes in the back of his head!
Tiny fingers that shaped the stars and planets,
Moulding dust and dirt that once began it,
Now tapping, pinching, holding, wiggling,
Laughing, squeezing, scrunching, giggling.
Games to play, and living to be done,
Growing pains and having fun.
Picking up slugs, studying snails,
Reaching out for hammers and nails.
Things he would later use right there,
To make and design a tables and chair.
And later still, would be used on him,
As he gave himself to change everything,
On a bitter cross that proved to be
A signpost for all history.
