Paddington in Peru – Lost & Found

In this third instalment Paddington and the Brown family head off to Peru to search for great aunt Lucy who has been lost somewhere in the jungle. However, in doing so Paddington himself finds he’s not sure which way to go. He’s become lost himself in the search for great aunt Lucy. In Luke 19 verse 10 Jesus talked about what it was to be lost and what he had come to do to help. He said he’d come to seek and to save those who were lost. If we go back to the old testament we find the voice of God saying, ‘If you seek me you will surely find me, I will be found by you.’ That’s in Jeremiah 29 verse 13 and 14.
Jesus also tells a story about a man looking for fine pearls, and when he finds that pearl the man gives everything he’s got to rescue it. Jesus goes on to say that the kingdom of God is like this fine pearl hunter, Jesus is searching for us, and he has given everything, even his own life, to rescue us. He came looking for us and continues to look for us to this day.
Jesus also tells a story of someone searching for fine treasure in a field. He says the kingdom is that treasure, the best treasure we could discover. We’re looking for God and he is looking for us.
There’s a moment in Paddington in Peru when great aunt Lucy says to Paddington, ‘In finding me you found yourself.’ And that’s another thing about our search for God, we find our true selves in Him, the true humans that God made us to be. Jesus encouraged us to keep looking, keep searching, keep knocking on the door, because it’s a lifelong pursuit to be found by God and to fully find ourselves in him. But it begins as we take that first step to follow Jesus and to trust and see where that leads.

‘The Kingdom of Heaven is like a treasure that a man discovered hidden in a field. In his excitement, he hid it again and sold everything he owned to get enough money to buy the field – and to get the treasure, too! Again, the Kingdom of Heaven is like a pearl merchant on the lookout for choice pearls. When he discovered a pearl of great value, he sold everything he owned and bought it!’
Matthew 13 v 44-46
