The God who gazed on chaos, who looked on nothing,
And called out order and a beautiful something.
The God who led his people through the wilderness
With the promise of a better life ahead,
The God who inspired David to sing of his joy and stress,
Who understood the pressure borne from a world in a mess,
The God who inspired Ruth to promise everything
To a broken Naomi who had lost all love and meaning.
The God who moved Nehemiah to dare to build again,
When the place he loved had been destroyed by powerful men.
The God who heard the cries of those in Babylon
When their only praise was a dry and painful song.
The God who gave Esther the courage and ideas
When she found herself cornered by cold hatred and fears.
The God who gave a young girl from Nazareth,
The faith to whisper her sure and gentle yes.
The God who would not keep away from harm and loss,
The God who became shame and scorn on a biting cross.
The God who knows just how hard and cold this life can be,
The God who’s felt that loneliness… like you and me.
The God with us in joy and hope, laughter and tears,
With us in our doubts and questions and fears.
The God who has promised a future and a hope,
And the God who has promised to never let us go.
