The Six Triple Eight – Letters of Hope

The film The Six Triple Eight tells the powerful and true story of the 6888th Battalion of the Women’s Army Corp. These 855 women of colour were assigned the overwhelming yet vital job of sorting millions of letters which had not been forwarded to the soldiers fighting in the second world war, but instead had stalled en route and were gathering dust in huge aircraft hangars. Though the job was seen by others as impossible the women of Six Triple Eight were determined to reconnect the men with their families, bringing hope and news that they so needed.
The Bible is full of letters, many of them from St Paul, but letters from others too, and they have come down the ages to bring the message of hope and life to us today. My guess is that none of the Biblical writers had any idea that their writings would be gathered into the bestselling book of all time. Yet these first Christians faithfully and honestly wrote to us about the realities of life with God and the promise of the hope we have in knowing Jesus. We will never know how many lives have been changed because they wrote their letters. I’m particularly grateful for the verse in John’s first letter, at the start of chapter – ‘See how much our heavenly father loves us, his love is so great that he calls us his children.’ That’s a verse I often come back to and I’m glad it’s in that letter.
We never know what people are going through, and sending someone a text, or an email, a card or a letter might just be what they need to give them a lift.
