In the film Here, we watch a single spot through the ages, from the dinosaurs up to the house built on the land in the present day. Much of the story revolves around the lives of Richard and Margaret and their wider family. This story is a reminder that time moves on, we come and go, and the title Here is an encouragement to do our best to appreciate this moment now, this is what we have. This space we inhabit is a gift.
We are told in Exodus 3 that God’s name is I Am, he is in the present, here with us now. The problem for us is that we are often not present, our phones often take us out of this moment, out of the here and now, and our worries about the past and future do the same.
The Bible contains various long lists of people who have come and gone, a kind of literary version of the film Here. A record of those who have been here before. And these names are of folk we may not know at all. Matthew 1 begins with a list that runs from Abraham to Mary’s husband Joseph, Luke goes back further, beginning with Adam and going all the way to Mary. And there other lists too. Hebrews 11 lists those who’ve travelled this way of faith. These various lists remind us of at least one vital thing – no one goes unseen or unknown by God. We don’t know all these people, but God does. No one is forgotten or unnoticed. We may not be famous or successful. We may not be rich or influential. But with God that’s not the point. Psalm 139 reminds us that God has seen and known us since we were conceived in the womb. We are precious to him. And he has given us this moment, so he can be in it with us.
