This film is about the terror and tragedy at the Munich Olympics in 1972, when eleven Israeli hostages and were held captive and then murdered in the Olympic village. We see the tragedy unfold through the eyes of the ABC sports presenters who have to switch from presenting events at the games, to covering the breaking news story. There is a moment in this film when the team realise they need to be careful with their coverage as it may actually be aiding the Black September terrorists and kidnappers. This was the first time that a news story of this kind had been broadcast around the world.
We are so aware of the many heartbreaking news stories around the world today. The news comes fast to our phones now, and anyone may play a part in capturing it with the technology in the palm of their hand.
In the psalms in the Bible the writers frequently cry out to God for a better world, a world of peace and harmony, a world without the terrible and bewildering news. And of course many uplifting stories happen every day, people express their God-given humanity in all kinds of acts of kindness and understanding. Folks look out for friends and strangers. Lives and resources are frequently shared.
Proverbs 11 v 17 says that we destroy ourselves a little bit every time we are cruel, but kindness nourishes us. It’s good for us. We may not be able to change the many dark situations around the globe, but we can pray that we will have the courage and sensitivity to spot those moments when we can be kind to others.
