Peter looks at Jesus with worry in his eyes,
‘We need to pay our temple tax – and quick!’ he cries.
Jesus nods quietly, he is calm and shrewdly wise.
‘Get out and catch a fish, that’s what I advise.’
Peter frowns, what good will that do?
But he goes anyway and comes back with one or two.
Jesus says, ‘Right open that fish’s mouth wide.’
And right there for their taxes, there’s a coin inside!
Two realities coming together, two systems embrace,
The ways of the world and God’s generous saving grace.
Matthew 17 v 24-27
