The swashbuckling film William Tell begins with the legendary moment when William is attempting to shoot an apple of his son’s head. Then it jumps back in time and we begin to discover why. It’s 1307 and a tyrannical Austrian king wants to muscle in on Switzerland and dominate its people. William is a hunter who lives a peaceful life, but he is drawn into fighting the invaders. When a pole is erected in his village and a helmet placed upon it. The locals are told this represents the Austrian king and they must bow to it when they pass. Well Mr Tell is having none of that and so he is ordered to shoot an apple of his son’s head.
In Daniel chapter 7 verse 14 there is an extraordinary picture of hope, the son of man descends and we are told he will rule everyone, everywhere for all time. He is given honour and royal power and he will rule with justice. A timely message for this disturbing and restless age we live in.
We can be pressured into bowing to all kinds of things, the subtle empires of this world constantly feed us a worldview that clashes with the promised hope and peace of God. In this world you will have trouble, Jesus said, and how well he knew that. The leaders of his day wanted him to bow to their ideas about religion, power, life and God. And in the wilderness he was tempted to succumb to chasing after worldly glory and self-satisfaction. But he refused and Hebrews 4 v 15 tells us that Jesus has been tempted in every way that we are and so he can help us with all that we face. Thank you lord, that you can help us today, and that one day you will reign with your kingdom of peace forever. AMEN.
