Mother Hen

Inspired by an Easter week reflection from the YouVersion Bible app.

‘Oh Jerusalem, how I long to gather your children under my wings and offer you my care…’
Jesus’ heart breaks as he looks on the city he loves. The tears stain his face, slipping over his chin and marking the dust at his feet. The longing is writ large, creasing his expression. Like a mother hen shielding the chicks she loves from fire and harm, he longs to bring the people close and shelter  them. By the end of that week he will do what a mother hen does when a farmyard fire threatens. He will have taken the deadly heat and given his life for them. And like a mother hen he will give up everything, while the young sheltered beneath his wings will be rescued and restored to life. The pain and compression in his heart will urge him on. Through darkness and oppression, slander and suffering. And his love will burn on. Like Moses lifting up the bronze snake as the people he loves crossed the desert, so he will be lifted up. Drawing the eyes of the world to look to him for peace and rescue.
