Snow White – Reflections on being acceptable

In the new life-action film Snow White we see the wicked step-mother regularly talking to her mirror, presenting herself and asking who is the fairest in the land. Of course she is desperate for the mirror to tell her that it is her… however there is one who hast stolen the top spot, and must therefore be bumped off. Thinking on these scenes of the step-mother and her insecurities, made me think about the number of times I look at my phone now. This is the age of the selfie… and we frequently look into our electronic mirrors, take a picture and share it.  Not so much asking the question who is the fairest… but perhaps regularly asking are we fair enough? Do we come across as acceptable in this visual age? I should know, I took a selfie just yesterday, and shared it on Facebook to show off my new glasses. Hoping that the wider world would deem them acceptable.

I’m not knocking this – I take it as a sign of our need for affirmation – not so much from the world around, but from the one who is full of good things. The one who can truly affirm us in all our uniqueness because he made us. He designed us and wired us up. He is total love, and is full of love for us, not based on what we look like, but based on his deep love and care for us.

The message version of Psalm 46 verse 10 invites us to – ‘step out of the traffic and take a long, loving look at our God…’

Not easy to do this, we live with all these pressures to conform to the ways of the world. I should know, I’m constantly fretting about whether I’m enough! Whether I’m acceptable and ‘good enough’. Getting older too adds to the feeling that I am increasingly invisible. We are surrounded by the traffic of life which can weigh heavy on us and bring us down. But we have the great gift of prayer, and nothing is off the table when it comes to talking to our God. So we can talk to him about all of these things, our fears and insecurities about who we are – and if we are enough – and ask for his perspective and his help with our worries.
