Three Chords & The Truth

I came across a great quote this week from the lead singer of the punk band The Clash – Joe Strummer once said, ‘When I started they told me all I needed was three chords and the truth – turns out I only needed two and a few vague ideas.’
In my teens I discovered punk and it embedded itself in my life. The ethos of it, that you don’t need to wait for permission or to be good enough has stayed with me as I continue to try new ways of communicating what it is in the Bible.
I’ve also often described following Jesus as being a bit like punk – you don’t need to be good at it – you just have a go, make a start. And that falls in line with Jesus’ invitation to ‘Follow me.’ Something we can do each day even though we often fall on our faces. And Joe Strummer’s quote reminds me again of this. We don’t need all the answers, we don’t need to be sorted out, we don’t need to know even three chords… we bring who are, with what we are, our personalities, preferences, mistakes and meandering. That’s the best way to start. Not trying to be a Christian in the shape of someone else. But being the precious flawed humans that we are. God has wired you and I up, uniquely so, and we each have our special part in his plans. We are each a vital part in God’s jigsaw of life. With our own shape, size, quirks and place.
