I’ve been encouraged recently by some reflections from Every Day With Jesus
about mental health and how it affected characters in the Bible.
So here is a reflection inspired by these.
Jonah, Elijah, and Hagar,
Naomi, Job, and David,
They all came to points in their life
When they felt empty, washed up, hopeless.
Struggling and barely able to lift their heads.
Naomi so broken she labelled herself ‘Bitter’.
They did remarkable things for God,
As you have (though you may not realise it).
But that didn’t protect them from pain,
And the feelings of trouble and despair.
Job’s friends came along but didn’t bring comfort
And understanding, instead only accusing him,
And questioning his faith.
Hagar collapsed in the desert, fearing she might die.
But God was deeply concerned,
And he met them in their emptiness.
He fed Elijah and Hagar, knowing their
Practical needs as well as their fears.
While David poured out his longings
In words that echo down the centuries for us,
Raw cries of faith in a God who knows sorrow and grief.
Genesis 21 v 14-20, 1 Kings 19 v 3-9, Isaiah 53 v 3, Job 10
