The Amateur – Out of our depth

When CIA decoder Heller sets out on a mission to avenge the death of his wife he soon finds himself out of his depth. He is brilliant technician and gadget builder, but he is not a superspy. So before long he is floundering and enlists the help of Inquiline. Together they will do what they can to track down the bad guys down and bring them down.

If you are anything like me you may often feel out of depth in this life. An amateur. I am socially quite awkward and struggle when in social situations, even going to church can be stressful for me, knowing I am going to be with a large group of people.  I also find myself, after 40-odd years as a Christian, struggling with prayer and worship living my life. When I was younger I felt bullet proof, these days I feel as if I’m made of damp cardboard at times. Which is why we need others, Paul, writing in his first letter to the Corinthians (chapter 12) described us as being like a body, and we need all the parts. The glamorous and exciting bits and the unseen vital parts. Like the hard skin under our feet, or the ear wax. Not pretty but how we need these buts.

We cannot function solely on our own, we need each other to make the body work. If the head decided to take a hike the whole body would collapse. It would all be over. I often say we are all unbalanced, all focused and passionate about our own different things. And that’s how it should be, we are all unique, but that’s also why we need each other, to bring balance and connection. I sometimes hand out jigsaw pieces when I speak, to remind folk how vital and different we all are, precious and much needed to make up God’s bigger picture in this world. But as only one piece we cannot control the whole picture. We each play our part. You know what it’s like when you have finished a 5000 piece jigsaw only to discover a vital piece missing. Well… you are that vital piece. I like the Message version take on Psalm 23 v 5 – you revive my drooping head. We can all feel overwhelmed and adrift and out of our depths at times. Be encouraged, you are not alone.
