Downsizing – the line in our hearts

In the film Downsizing Paul discovers a groundbreaking way to improve his life – to go smaller! If he undertakes a process to become one of the little people – just a few inches in size – he will be helping to save the planet, and his money will go much further. So he does it. And he moves to an idyllic community called Leisureland, a little people’s paradise where he takes up residence in his own mansion. What could go wrong? Well, plenty. He discovers that, having so much money now, some of the little people have become lazy, and when he tries to help one of the cleaners, Ngoc, he discovers that poverty has followed them all into this new world. Ngoc lives in a poor and marginalised community.

There is a saying – the line between good and evil runs through the centre of every human heart. And we find in this film that simply moving to a whole new world does not eliminate selfishness and pain. The little people are still people, and they can still operate in a way that hurts others. I reckon we shouldn’t bother trying to live on other planets, we’ll only do to them what we have done to this one. Wherever we go we take our flawed selves with us. We need to accept that we are broken people, and simply putting us in a new world does not eliminate that line of good and evil running through our hearts.

The great news with Jesus is that we find forgiveness and a fresh start. Every day. With each new dawn we can bring to him the mistakes we make and receive his love and forgiveness and acceptance. And his help for the battle of living in a world fraught with temptation and carelessness. In this life we’ll never be perfect people, but in Jesus we can discover daily the forgiveness and new life that he brings.
