Ballerina

The film Ballerina is set in the action world of John Wick, the hero of 4 previous movies.

When Eve sets out to track down the man who killed her father she enters a training school to learn the skills she needs. There she is told that to catch an assassin, she must become the assassin. And from there she ends up in all kinds of troubling situations, smashing up the furniture and fisticuffing with an army of bad guys, on her quest to find the baddest of all guys.

The Old Testament features some intrepid heroes who have to fight bad guys, most famously David, who comes up against the despicable Goliath armed only with his faith, his sling and five stones. In order to rescue the threatened people of God, he must do battle with the foul-mouthed bully who is threatening them. Ehud and Gideon in the book of Judges also end up fighting  crucial battles.

But when Jesus comes to defeat the biggest enemy of all he does not become an assassin. This plan of all plans involves Jesus becoming the one who is assassinated. ‘We have all left God’s paths to follow our own.’ Isaiah tells us in chapter 53 of his book. ‘Yet our God laid on him the guilt and sins of us all.’ Jesus will defeat death and sin not with violence, but with his own sacrifice of peace and courage. Incredible courage when we consider what he went through for us. And it was a battle he looked like he had lost. When they buried him and sealed the tomb it seemed as if that was the end of the king of kindness. But no. Sunday dawned, creation shuddered and yawned, and the powerful Roman guards ran in fear as the tomb burst open and Jesus walked free. The man of resurrection has come to save us, having broken the shackles of sin and death.
