In the film Brick a couple on the verge of breaking up wake up one morning to find a strange wall has walled them in. Not only blocking their front door, but the windows and any means of escape from their apartment. And as they break through walls and floors to get into other people’s apartments they discover that everyone else has been bricked up by this strange grey wall. It seems to have appeared overnight and surrounded the whole building. And so they find themselves unable to escape. And this means that they must work together, be more honest with one another, and find a way to work out how to get back out into the outside world.
We can sometimes feel trapped in our lives, a bit locked in by life. Whether it’s to do with how honest we feel we can be, or finding people that we can trust, or finding others who will work with us and help us. Or finding friends and kindred spirits.
Jesus described himself as being the truth, the truth that could help set us free. And I like to think that he meant the truth about everything – the truth about life, the truth about the world, the truth about God, the truth about ourselves, and the truth about the struggles we face. He understood all of these things. Sometimes we can be the vehicle for bringing that truth to another person to help them be set free, even just a little bit.
And so a prayer: Lord you know how we can often feel trapped and locked in by life, and if we can be the means of bringing your truth and freedom to another person, please help us to do that. And Lord if we ourselves feel locked in please would you bring someone into our lives today who will bring a little more of your freedom and truth we pray, in Jesus name, amen.

It was fascinating to read about this film Brick. It sounds like a great idea for a film. I like the way you connect this to the freedom that the gospel offers us. Indeed we are so easily enslaved to all kinds of idols, obsessions and cul de sacs that rob us of meaning, joy and purpose. The gospel sets us free to be truly human and fully alive. Great reflections Dave!
