In the film F1, when Formula 1 driver Joshua is worried about what others are thinking and doing, his mother asks him if he still loves the driving, and he replies that he does, so she then tells him to remember what his dad said, ‘Just put your head down and drive.’ Later when Joshua and an older driver Sonny are out chatting together Joshua keeps checking his phone for comments and feedback, so Sonny tells him to put his phone away. ‘It’s just noise,’ he says, ‘drive your car, you’re really good at it.’
It’s very easy in this 24/7 social media age to worry about what others think of us, and to go chasing affirmation. We certainly all need encouragement, we are after all in this race of life together to help each other keep going. But there are times when it’s good to be reminded that our following Jesus begins with focussing on him. That’s the main thing. His love for us and our flawed devotion to him. When Peter and the other disciples had seriously messed up, Jesus asked Peter whether he loved him. And when Peter affirmed that he did, Jesus asked him to care for his sheep. But it began with that relationship. Without Jesus’s love for Peter and Peter’s love for Jesus, it would just have been about human endeavour. Jesus care for us is the main thing. But in a world of noise it’s not always easy to keep the main thing – the main thing.
So a prayer –
‘Lord, please help us to see and hear you through the distractions and noise help us to sense you with us, and how much we mean to you. Without you we can’t do much at all. But with you all things are possible. Thank you for your love for us.
In Jesus’ name, amen.
