‘Literature is like an ambulance, racing to save someone’s life.’ So says French Jane Austen fan Agathe Robinson while on a writing retreat in England. She also says, ‘I believe that some books become part of our lives because they reveal to us something of our true nature.’ Agathe has come on the retreat to try and escape her own disastrous love life.
Certainly you could say that the Bible reveals something of our true nature to us, there’s a saying that just as we read the Bible so it reads us. And it has at times been like an ambulance, offering life support when we are struggling. Only this week I have been reminded of a verse from Proverbs 3 which is timely for me – ‘Trust in the Lord and lean not on your own understanding.’ There is another saying about losing yourself in a good book, well I often think we may find ourselves in THE Good Book.
The tales and teaching that rise from the characters and incidents in the Bible often reflect back to us the people we have become and are becoming. I have often done a Jonah and tried to head my own way. We frequently wrestle with the Goliaths in our lives, and like Martha we may be distracted and forget the one thing that is most important. And yes, there are times when we are asked if we will offer our Yes to God, as Mary did nine months before the first Christmas. These days we can receive the Bible in so many ways – we can watch it, listen to it, and read it in book form or on our phones. How do you engage with yours?
‘All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness…’
2 Timothy 3 v 16
