The Friend – the God who understands our pain

When Iris loses her best friend Walter she is filled with grief, then she discovers one of his last requests was that she look after his great Dane, Apollo. And Apollo is one big dog! Iris is not allowed to keep pets in her apartment, but she takes him home all the same. The poor dog is broken-hearted and refuses to eat or respond to her. But in their sadness, little by little, they help each other live again.

When Jesus lost one of his best friends, Lazarus, (in John chapter 11) he was heartbroken.

He saw the grief in Lazarus’s sisters, Mary and Martha, and it cut deeply into him. So much so that he cried.

We might wonder why he should weep when he knew he was going to resurrect Lazarus soon. I think it was all about the suffering in this world. Knowing that we live in this place where things go wrong, and where we experience deep disappointment and loss. Jesus felt that deeply and no doubt longed for a time when things would be set right.

In the book of revelation chapter 21 we are assured that a new day will dawn when there are no more tears and there is no more pain. And that is a great hope for us as we follow Jesus. But in the meantime we can be sure that he understands how hard this life can be, and feels the pain that we feel.
