Film Friday Freakier Friday is one of those body swap comedies, not unlike like Big or 13 Going on 30. At the start Anna is soon to marry Eric, but their daughters Harper and Lily do not get on at all. When they go to a party, along with Anna’s mum Tess, something strange happens, and before you can say ‘it could only happen in a movie’ Anna and Tess have swapped to become Harper and Lily and vice versa. So the daughters are horrified to find themselves in much older bodies, while Anna and Tess have turned into shockingly sensible teenagers. As strange as this is, this is another story about lives and hearts changed. Because the strange science will only be reversed when the characters have radical transformations for the good.
The history of Christianity is of course littered with lives transformed, and for the greatest story of radical redemption we need only look to Jesus. In a shocking twist to his life story, he shook the universe with an earthquake and returned from crucifixion, restored to life when he had been wrapped in death. The book of Acts is littered with those impacted by that life changing earthquake, including thousands who encountered Jesus in his followers on the day of Pentecost, in Acts 2, and had their lives turned around for good. None of these hero’s were perfect people or superhuman, they were quick to point out that it was the glorious power and love of God working through them, spilling over like living water across the land. And so it is today. Lives continue to be changed and turned around as the love of Jesus spills out through us. Often in unexpected ways. Not because we are strong or perfect, but because he is. And because he loves to use misfits like you and me to revive those who are hungry and thirsty for something more.
