Hannah holds nothing back. The words tumble like a rushing waterfall from her lips. Trouble has pushed her towards the precipice of real faith. She has nothing else, and she does not realise how close this has brought her to the living God. A priest stumbling across her does not recognise this kind of raw, honest devotion. His faith is packaged in an acceptable form. This woman’s praying is ragged, untidy, true and revealing. He can only think she must be so honest because she has been drinking. She is drunk, but not on wine, on the realisation that God is all she has, all she needs, all she is reaching for, a potent mix. And the living water from this deep well spills over and splashes on the priest’s shoes, so much so that faith wells up in him, and he makes a promise to her that only the living God can fulfil. Tears spill from her eyes as the smile lights across her face. She stands and nods and speaks quietly. She walks humbly away her head held high in hope.
