Why did they laugh when they had just been mourning?
Was it as much about surprise as disbelief?
The shock of Jesus daring to say the child was only asleep?
The strangeness of hearing this amongst the sorrow?
The possibility of another outcome,
The idea that another door might open?
Did they laugh from the threat of
Embarrassment too? That this might become a difficult situation?
Not having the imagination of God,
They were unable to think bigger,
To see the world as Jesus saw it.
Whatever, they laughed whilst tears still stained their faces,
And not long after, the sleeping youngster stirred,
And yawned and stretched and lived again,
And then her wonder-struck parents laughed too.
