Barb is travelling to a frozen lake through Minnesota when she becomes lost and so stops at a cabin in the snowy woods. She soon discovers that the couple living there are holding a young woman captive. Barb promises to rescue her, and risks everything she has to set her free.
In the Bible, in the gospel of Luke chapter 4, Jesus describes himself as one who has come to set captives free. In his mission he gave everything to do that. We read of him bringing good news to those who were rejected and marginalised and criticised. He healed and restored those who were suffering, and he promised a full and total redemption for this world and the universe. And so he gave his own life for this great work, dying on a cross, taking on himself every shred of brokenness.
And then three days later, like Aslan in the story of Narnia, he broke the chains of death and hell and returned from the grave, very much alive and well. This world is not as it should be, it is broken and wracked by the chains of selfishness and wrongdoing. Paul writes about creation itself writhing and groaning for freedom. And this is the mission Jesus began. One day there will be a new world, where tears and pain and hurt and loss will be a distant memory. A place where our God of joy and compassion and life will be our king forever.
Until then we look to Jesus each day, to bring his help and redemption into our lives, flowing through us to the lives of others.
