Spinal Tap 2:The End Continues – All Things New?

Spinal Tap 2, out this year, is a follow up to the classic film from 1984, This is Spinal Tap. The first film gave us the memorable phrase about turning up the sound dial to 11, one more than is usually possible. I recently saw Freakier Friday, a sequel to the 2003 Freaky Friday film. I read yesterday that a Bend it Like Beckham sequel is in the making, the first film came out in 2002. There is a lot of talk in film circles at the moment about revisiting old ideas. Disney is remaking animated classics, Marvel films continues to revisit Spiderman, whilst DC goes on with Batman and Superman. There is a cry for new ideas, not merely revisiting the old.

And I think this is a challenge to those of us who follow of Jesus too. God is endlessly creative, and in the bible, in Revelation 21, he is described as making all things new. In Isaiah 43 the word of God comes to us about our God making a new way through the wilderness. A pathway to follow. And Jesus’s invitation of course, is to follow him, and following means moving forward. I like this saying – ‘A monument declares this is where I was when I stopped moving, whereas a footprint says, this is where I was when I last moved forward.’

Our human nature often leads us to cling to what we know, to what is tried and tested, safe and secure, and I am certainly like that, but Peter knew all about boats and if he’d have stayed safely in his, he’d have never walked on water, or stepped out to begin the first church. Little by little, step by step, Jesus invites us to keep moving on. So I’ll finish with a phrase I love, from Shane Claiborne, ‘Get ready because God is preparing you for something very, very…. small. Because small things change the world.’ It’s not easy, but please help us Lord, to keep moving on with you.

If you've appreciated this, why not...
