Roofman – a break through

When Jeffrey Manchester can’t afford a bike for his daughter’s birthday he makes a disastrous decision and decides to start breaking into McDonald’s restaurants. Smashing his way in through the roof in the night and then waiting for  the morning so that he can hold up the workers and get the money from the store. When he’s arrested he breaks out of prison and then takes up residence in a huge Toys R Us store, where he lives for quite a while, using items from the store to set up home in a hidden area.

Breaking through roofs set me thinking about the famous story in Mark’s gospel, chapter 2, where four friends are so intent on bringing their friend to Jesus that they break through the roof of a house. Digging through the clay roof they then lowered their friend down to Jesus, on a stretcher. Jesus then amazes everybody, not initially by healing the man, but by forgiving his sins, something that they all thought was impossible without going to the temple and buying a sacrifice. But Jesus demonstrates this radical way of God, that people can be forgiven like this, that you and I can be forgiven anywhere and everywhere because of what Jesus has done. And Jesus then goes on to demonstrate that he has the power to forgive sins by healing the man who then is able to walk home, restored and completely freed from his past.

Great to read this Dave. I love the way you connect this film to Mark 2 and the healing of the paralysed man.
I’m thinking about crafting a short course on Mark’s snappy gospel so you alerting me to this film is going to help me in my work.
    Thanks Dave!!!
