With many of the regular singers away fighting in World War 1, the choral society’s choirmaster decides to start recruiting lots of the young working class people, and soldiers who have returned wounded from the fighting. Little by little the music begins to break down long-held barriers and unite the folk. They were divided by war, the movie tells us with its strapline, but he united them in music. Music is such a powerful gift from God.
The Bible is full of songs, not least in the book of Psalms. Songs of hope, pain, questioning, struggle and faith. Songs that remind the people how God has helped them in the past and how he can help them in the present. Singing together unites people at concerts, sporting events, weddings and funerals. It can bring us together, and express so much. The singers in the choral have to audition, but with God all are invited to join the song. No matter what our background, experience, mistakes, regrets, ability or credentials. We can join the song of salvation and the hymn of hope brought about by Jesus.
In the beginning, we are told in Genesis, God created. And he made us in his image. And music is just one of the many kinds of creativity God has given us. The Bible is full of so many ways that express this, from letters, parables and poetry, to the prophets who acted, mimed, made models and created pictures to draw the people closer to God. There are so many ways we can express our love for God and our trust in him, and music is one of the gifts God has given us.
