Train Dreams – Hope of God’s presence in the midst of despair

Robert is a logger and railroad worker in the early twentieth century. He seems to have little direction in his life until he meets Gladys and they fall in love, build a home together and have a daughter. Robert has to go away at times for his work, and during one spell a fire engulfs their home. Robert returns to find everything destroyed and no sign of Gladys or his daughter. He is stricken with grief and carries his pain through the rest of his life. He constantly awaits the return of his family and longs that they be reunited.

One of the promises Jesus makes is to be with us through all that happens. He warns us that this world will have trouble, but promises in John 14 v 18 that he will never leave us or forsake us. He also promises a future hope for us, beyond this life, a place where there will be no more tears or loss or pain. A home full of light, love and hope. We may carry so many things with us through life, but we have the sure hope that Jesus is with us, and we can always pour out our troubles and burden to him. He offers peace in the midst of our turmoil and distress, having live through terrible times himself.

In Revelation 21 John hears a loud shout, saying, “Look, the home of God is now among his people! He will live with them, and they will be his people. God himself will be with them. He will remove all of their sorrows, and there will be no more death or sorrow or crying or pain. For the old world and its evils are gone forever.”
