The film Sinners has just broken Oscar records by being nominated for 16 awards, more film than any other. Sinners is another vampire movie, there have been many down the cinematic decades, going all the way back to the first – Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror in 1922. So why the fascination with blood? Perhaps because without it we are done for.
Without the red stuff in our veins our hearts stop pumping. (No more science bits here I’m afraid, I’m not a doctor.)
In Leviticus 17 v 11 the Bible tells us that ‘…the life of any creature is in its blood. I have given you the blood so you can make atonement for your sins. It is the blood, representing life, that brings you atonement.’
So blood embodies existence, forgiveness, health and rescue. It’s powerful. It is life itself.
That’s why Jesus lifted a cup of wine and shared it with his followers, it represented his life, and his life brought us forgiveness, rescue and a forever kind of change.
I heard someone say (it might have been Jordan Raynor) that you could call us Christian vampires. We need the blood of Jesus, without it we are done for, we fade away. The first Christians were wrongly labelled as cannibals by some, because rumours spread that they were actually consuming the body and blood of Jesus. But we share bread and wine to remind us what has happened, what Jesus has started for us, in pouring out his blood and laying down everything for you and I. New life. New hope. New purpose. For people, for the world, for the universe, for all of creation. That’s powerful.
