In the film Eternity, Larry chokes on a pretzel and finds himself on a train heading for the afterlife. He arrives in a place called the Junction, a huge building full of different stands offering different version of eternity. A bit like fresher’s week perhaps, at a university. He is also met by his Afterlife Coordinator who explains that he has a week to decide which version of eternity he would like to choose, and having decided there is no going back.
I wonder what your idea of eternity is, my guess is it won’t be much like the Junction in this film. I was once encouraged by a friend who told me that God’s original plan for eternity, at the start of Genesis, was a beautiful garden full of possibilities and creativity. And I like that. In Revelation 21 John sees a city full of peace and shalom, harmony, where there will be no more crying or pain, and the sea, which represent chaos, will be no more. Whether a city or a garden one thing is sure – it will be a wonderful place. And without any time we won’t worry about the past or fret about the future. We will finally live in the present moment. All the time.
And all this is possible because of Jesus, who opened heaven’s door for us, through his death on the cross, and his resurrection, and he invites us to trust him with our lives, now and for eternity.
