Marty Supreme – Chaos and mistakes

The film Marty Supreme is set in the 1950s, and is about shoe salesman Marty Mauser, who has one dream, to win the British Table Tennis Championship. Marty is a brilliant player, supremely confident, and his dream dominates his life. But he is also chaotic and along the way he gets into all kinds of scrapes and causes all kinds of problems. His dream is everything to him but at times that seems to come at the expense of others. It’s an extreme and frenetic film, and you could say Marty is like an extreme example of us. He keeps getting wrong, messing up, losing his way and upsetting others.

One of the things we are told repeatedly in the Bible is this – our God is slow to anger, faithful and compassionate, and rich in love and forgiveness. This is mentioned in Exodus 34 v 6, Numbers 14 v 18, Nehemiah 9 v 17 and Psalms 86 v 15 and 103 v 8.

If you’re anything like me then you make plenty of mistakes, don’t always do the right thing, often get into muddles and scrapes, and wish that life was a little easier and less of a challenge. But we’re not alone, In Romans 7 Paul writers about his mistakes and struggles to do the right thing. Who will help us, he says? Thank God, he says, for Jesus, for our help lies in him.

Our God is slow to get angry and full of constant love. If you are struggling today, hold onto that. He wants to help us.

If you've appreciated this, why not...
