The film Nuremberg tells the true story of the trials of 22 Nazi war criminals, held in Germany in 1946. Psychiatrist Douglas Kelley is sent to assess the mentality of the criminals, especially that of Hermann Göring. He wants to discover what made men like these so capable of such evil. At one point Kelley chats to a fellow American who tells him that the reason these terrible things happened was partly because others let them do it and didn’t stand up. After the war Kelley wrote a book about his experiences, but was disappointed that so many seemed to ignore his warnings.
In the Biblical book of Amos the prophet cries out – ‘Let justice roll down like rivers, and righteousness like a neverending stream.’ The prophets were often calling for justice and compassion in society. However, It has been said that the line between good and evil runs through the heart of every human being. And we are all capable of being frightened and selfish people. We are not Superwoman or Iron Man, it’s not easy to stand up for what is right, to speak out for truth and justice. It can be hard and require a lot of courage.
Ultimately Jesus fought the evil of this world with service, grace and the sacrifice of his life. And in doing so he opened the door for us to draw courage, humility and compassion from him. We all need these things and it’s worth remembering that even the smallest acts of kindness and service towards others can make a difference.
