Dave Hop In the movie Song Sung Blue, when singers Mike and Claire meet they fall in love and decide to form Lightning and Thunder, a Neil Diamond tribute act. They have great chemistry and little by little they gain popularity as a stage act. All is going really well, as they sing favourites like I’m a Believer, Forever in Blue Jeans and of course Sweet Caroline. Then one day disaster strikes and one of them is injured in an accident. Suddenly all their plans and dreams are put on hold.
I came across a profound metaphor for life in a book called Meditations for Mortals, we might expect life to be like a ride in a luxury yacht, but in reality we are all in our little canoes, battling the currents of life. Life is hard at times and it has a habit of ambushing us, we all know what it’s like to have our hopes scuppered by the unexpected.
Paul wrote about three things we can hold onto – faith, hope and love. I came up with saying a while back – hope is like a song held in our heart long before the dawn chorus can begin… In the film The Amazing Spiderman 2 Spidey’s girlfriend Gwen says this – it’s easy to have hope when things are going well, but there may be dark days ahead and that’s when hope is needed the most. Jesus told us there would be hard times, but that he had overcome the troubles of this world. So for us hope is like a rock, and that rock is Jesus, someone we can cling to when the storms come. May you rediscover the hope of Jesus today.
