In one of The Night Manager series the hero Jonathan Pine find himself face to face with his enemy Richard Roper. Roper offers him one deal after another to try and win him over to the dark side, ending with the promise that he could give him the world. But Jonathan refuses, saying he knows that Roper is just a con man. When Roper tries to hurt Jonathan by bringing up Jonathan’s dead father, Pine replies with a simple but powerful statement, ‘My father loved me.’ And that assurance cuts through all the temptation.
We are currently in the season of Lent when we remember Jesus’s time in the wilderness. A brutal time of heat, hunger, hardship… and pressure to give up his mission. The tempter was a conman, and Jesus repelled all his temptations. Ultimately Jesus knew his Father loved him, he had heard the promise at his baptism. ‘This is my son,’ the voice from heaven said, ‘whom I absolutely love.’
We face many difficulties in this life, many temptations and struggles, but be assured of this – your heavenly father loves you, and we can take all these things to him.
