In the classic war film A Bridge Too Far there is a scene when Major Cook is leading his men across the river so that they can take the Bridge at Nijmegen. However it’s a very difficult mission, and they’re being attacked by gunfire all the time. All the men are in fear for their lives but they continue to row, and they continue to battle on across the water to reach the other side. And as they go they do something else – they pray repeatedly. So here they are working as hard as they can to cross the river, and praying as hard as they can that they will make it across safely.
There’s an old saying about praying as if everything depends on God and working as if everything depends on you. That’s what we see illustrated here and it’s so true for our lives isn’t it, that we can’t separate what we do from what we pray. We give what we can, we do what we can, and we pray as we can. The two things working together.
So often in the Psalms we find that the writers attribute what has happened to God intervening, and yet at the same time they are doing everything they can as well. There’s a similar reminder about this in the film Hacksaw Ridge, where the medic Desmond Doss is working as hard as he can to save the lives of the men in his unit, and all the time he’s praying, ‘Help me get one more, Lord, help me get one more.’ He saves over 50 men’s lives by doing that. So today be encouraged that you’re actions and your prayers can work together, and God can work through it all.
