Mother’s Pride – A wedding with no wine

The Drover’s Arms is in trouble, the food is not great, the place is mostly empty and the landlord is perpetually on a grumpy old day. And then absolute disaster strikes – they run our of beer and can’t afford new stock. Then to add insult to injury the landlord’s wayward son returns from a life of fame and rock’n’roll, and no one is pleased to see him. That is, until he starts brewing beer…

Jesus and his friends once attended a place that ran out, not of beer but of wine. And there is a moment when Mary, Jesus’s mum nudges her son and whispers, ‘This is your chance, do something!’ And Jesus does indeed do a miracle. I can’t help wondering how though many times prior to this Mary might have nudged Jesus, hoping that he would finally step up to his calling, only to be told, not yet mum. It’s not time. But at this wedding, Jesus senses that the time is right, and he does the kind of miracle which demonstrates the abundance of his father’s kingdom. Like feeding thousands of people, Jesus generously blesses everyone, not least the bride and groom who were in grave danger of looking bad if their wedding fell apart.

It’s also a miracle which demonstrates that Jesus had not come to big himself up, most of the guests would have had no idea where the new wine had come from, Jesus didn’t virtue signal what he’d done he didn’t splash it all over social media, he just quietly got on with doing his father’s work. Having been tempted in the wilderness to do big power shows, he knew that his calling was to help people, not to become a superstar. He had come to wash feet and to serve, a humble ministry which would save us and ultimately rescue the universe.
