Wuthering Heights – A different love

In the latest version of the classic tale Wuthering Heights, Cathy and Heathcliff grow up together as close and caring friends, Heathcliff having been adopted by Cathy’s unruly and stormy father. As they get older they fall in love, but Cathy’s aspirations lead her to chase after the affections of a wealthy neighbour, and unsure of Heathcliff’s love she marries Edgar. However, her passion for Heathcliff never changes and it eventually turns to obsession. This is a film which highlights the dark nature of a relationship involving two lovers who are capable of being cruel and self-absorbed. Cathy’s father was himself nasty and unpredictable and he has no doubt left his scars on both Heathcliff and Cathy.

When Paul writes about love in 1 Corinthians 13 he describes it as being patient and kind, not self-seeking or demanding. Love he says rejoices in truth and is always hopeful. A very different kind of love from that which we see in this film. Love is not easy, and we often find it easier to love things than people. We love hobbies, or food, or films, or music. But knowing we are loved by our heavenly father can help us in our calling to love others. So that’s something we can continually pray for, a greater sense of God’s love so that it spills from us to those around us.

It was this love that took Jesus to the cross, through the pain and the loss, praying, ‘Not my will but yours’. It was this love that took him to a borrowed tomb, and which resurrected him on that astonishing Sunday morning.
