Midwinter Break – A failure to communicate

In the film Midwinter Break Stella books a holiday in Amsterdam for herself and her husband Gerry. The two head off to a nice hotel in a  beautiful city with time to see the sights and reconnect. They love each other but all is not well between them. Gerry has been drinking heavily for a while and Stella feels misunderstood by him. After a while the fractures in their marriage come to a head. Stella is a Christian and she feels misunderstood by Gerry. And both of them are battling with a tragedy in their past.

In the film Cool Hand Luke, one of the characters says – ‘What we’ve got here is a failure to communicate.’ That line came to mind as I watched this film. Stella and Gerry were struggling to understand each other.

To find ourselves misunderstood can leave us in a lonely place. We long to be known and accepted.

Life is full of misunderstandings  and not least about Christianity and Jesus. And I long to share the truth of how earthed he was in reality, how understanding he is, and how we Christians are just a flawed bunch of beggars who have found nourishing bread in Jesus. He is not just another guru, or a good man, everything he did and said pointed to the fact that he was the One, the brilliant son of God who could save us from ourselves and set us free from the damage that  rebellion and sin have caused. He’s the king of creative kindness who cares about those who are lost and broken, scared and sidelined. Christianity is so much more than just another religion. And praying is so much more than asking God for things. In Jesus we can get to know God, which is of course a lifelong pursuit, and in him we discover our true selves.
