Glenrothan – two brothers

Brothers Sandy and Donal have been separated for thirty-five years. Sandy has stayed in Scotland to run the family whiskey distillery, Donal went to America and opened a jazz club. However, when the club burns down the reluctant Donal decides to travel home with his wife and daughter. Things don’t go well though, past hurts run deep and Donal struggles to open up to Sandy.

Two brothers falling out is an ancient tale, and it may well remind us of Jacob and Esau. Jacob tricked his father and his brother and fled. He did very well for himself, made a lot of money, got married and had a big family. Centuries later Jesus would tell a story about two brothers, one of whom ran away. You can read it in Luke 15.

Unlike Jacob, the prodigal in Jesus’ tale does not return filthy rich, he just limps home filthy. But his father runs to welcome him and protect his son from any in the community who might punish the boy for disgracing the family. The local folk might have declared the boy lost dead, but His father has never given up believing that his boy would return one day. And even thought the older brother despises him, the father throws a party and celebrates the return and resurrection of his beloved child. It’s a timeless tale of the goodness of God, and the longing he has to know us, welcome us and give us a fresh beginning.
