If ever there was a tale about the danger of greed then it’s this movie, How to Make a Killing. A retelling of the classic Kind Hearts and Coronets, it documents the escapades of Becket Redfellow, as he works his way through the members of his wealthy family so he can inherit the estate. Becket’s mother was rejected when she was pregnant and so he has been forever estranged from the family fortune. But not anymore, one by one he bumps of the Redfellows and little by little moves closer to the riches he believes he is rightfully owed. Early on Becket says that money does make you happy, but the film tells a different story as he descends further into the problematic mire created by his pursuit of wealth.
In the letter of 1 Timothy chapter 6 verse 10 we are assured that – the love of money is at the root of all kinds of evil. And in Hebrews 13 v 5 we are advised to – Stay away from the love of money; be satisfied with what you have.
It is not money itself which is dangerous, we all need money to survive, it can be used in all kinds of ways. It’s the love of it which can create problems, and it’s interest to note that the Hebrew line is followed by this promise – For God has said, “I will never fail you. I will never forsake you.” The Bible passage throws us back on God. We are encouraged to keep looking to our God who has always promised to be with us. He can help us to keep things in perspective. And he understands our needs and struggles. We’re also advised in Acts 20 v 35, that giving is better than getting. And so anything we can offer – a smile, support, a kind word, blesses God and others.
