When Julie Powell decides she needs a new dream in her life, a new goal to pursue, little by little she slowly realizes how much she loves cooking. And so she decides to tackle Julia Child’s classic cookbook, and to do so in a year, which means cooking 524 recipes and writing about her experience online. It’s a fascinating film about both Julie Powell and Julia Childs discovering how much they love cooking. And how that challenges and stretches them.
The Bible tells us in Psalm 37 v 4 that if we seek our happiness in God, he will give us our heart’s desire. Having dreams and goals can be both uplifting but also disappointing, because we may never feel we manage to achieve them. The Bible talks about how it’s good to have a vision (in the book of Proverbs 29 v 18), and I guess that’s a vision both of faith but also of purpose and of fulfilment in life. It’s something I’m thinking about a lot at present.
Do we dare to dream? And do we dare to make moves towards the fulfilment of that dream. Perhaps trying is enough. For Julie Powell it opened doors that she would never have expected. May we, as the days go by, discover something of what it means to follow our dreams, and not alone, but to follow them with Jesus.
