The Devil Wears Prada 2 – The power of weakness

In the film The Devil Wears Prada 2 there is trouble in the publishing world. No one is reading newspapers or magazines anymore, they all want online content, and just as journalist Andy is receiving an award everyone gets texts telling them they are all fired. No one needs these journalists now. Where they were once a force to be reckoned with, a vital voice steering the world, they are now a sidelined whimper, just a pale shadow with minimal impact.
It’s startling to realise that we no longer have the power we once had. It’s something we have to reckon with as we get older. Jars seem that bit harder to open and we cannot prize those pesky packets apart with the ease we once revelled in. We also become a little more invisible, people don’t notice us in the way they may once have done.
But this sense of weakness is nothing new for the kingdom of God. It always was founded on outcasts and nobodies. The early church was full of those who Jesus had befriended, those with little influence in society. The poor, the grieving, the lost, the outsiders. The reality with God is that he is always choosing those overlooked by others. When Jesus told his parable of the mustard seed it brought startling but heartening news. The mustard seed was a prolific weed, not a beautiful nicely-tended plant, and once planted nothing could stop it growing. You would find it in the cracks and the crannies, unstoppable, taking over the garden. Like a rampant global bramble bush. And so it is with this kingdom. It is uprising, unexpected, and irrepressible. Not full of perfect people. But full of those who know they are weak and know their need of the life-giving living God. In our weakness God is our strength and our help.
