Madfabulous

In the film Madfabulous the eccentric fifth Marquis of Anglesey returns to the family estate in a riot of nonconformity. A friend had told him ‘Always be true to yourself.’ And at one point the Marquis says, ‘Be yourself, everyone else is taken.’ And so the Marquis lives a life of relentless frivolity and bizarreness, hiring a theatre company to come and live with him, putting on extravagant shows, and buying expensive clothes and jewellery at the drop of a tiara. However his non-conformity bankrupts the estate and this has repercussions for the local community, many of whom rely on the estate for their work and income.

Lines like ‘be true to yourself’ really resonate with me, it’s easy to try and fit in just to try and please others, we were all designed to be unique by God, and we can sometimes bury our true God-given colours by attempting to conform for its own sake. But as the Marquis found, too much indulgence of our own desires can lead to harming others. Gentleness and understanding are important. May the Lord bring you into an ever deeper understanding of the love of God. Paul tells us in 2 Thessalonians 3 v 4. Be humble and gentle, he advises in Ephesians 4 v 2. And humility comes from knowing our place in God and in the world.

The one thing the Marquis longs for is a reconnection with his absent father, but his father stays at a distance. And that is what drives much of the sons reckless behaviour. In the prodigal son tale in Luke 15 we are assured that our kind and patient heavenly father has not stayed at a distance, but has come close and daily longs to reconnect with us, and to celebrate with us and show us his kindness and forgiveness.
