The sun is dying and so scientist Ryland Grace is sent into space to try and sort out the problem. Initially sent out with two others he wakes to find himself alone, light-years from earth and at first confused as to what he is doing there. As time goes by he rediscovers his mission, and then strikes up an unexpected friendship out there in deep space. This film put me in mind of another space travel movie, Passengers. In that story Jim Preston wakes up years too early on a flight to another far-distant utopian planet. He also finds himself stuck in space alone, unable to connect with all the other passengers who are still in deep sleep. His longing for company causes him to break the rules…
Science fiction tales of people stuck alone in space make me think of life down here. And how often we can feel alone on this planet. Longing for connection and understanding. I’m an introvert so too much connection can wear me out! But there is no doubt that we were made to be part of a body of people.
In 1 Corinthians 12 Paul describes us as being different bits, some of us like hands, some of us like listening ears, some of us empathetic hearts, some of us the voices of wisdom and reason, and many of us are like the lesser seen parts, which can be even more vital. This journey of life and faith is not intended to be a solo flight, but people are not always easy. They can be the best thing and the worst thing about life. If nothing else we can say that we each of us have the superpower of caring and an endless supply of smiles and kind words that we can offer, in the name of Jesus to one another.
