Ready Player One – Going another way

It is 2049 and the real world is a hard place. So Wade Watts and his peers spend their spare time playing video games, escaping from reality as they race around a virtual track, complete with King Kong, Dinosaurs and other deadly traps. However, every time they race they discover they are always destroyed before they can reach the end. Then Wade overhears the creator talking and he hears him mention something about going backwards, and the penny drops. So the next time he races, instead of zooming off with the others, as soon as the race starts he reverses backwards and discovers that the road opens up in a whole new way.

When Jesus walks into town at the start of Mark’s gospel he tells everyone that the kingdom of God has arrived and so they need to repent. The word he uses means several things, change direction, turn around, rethink, adopt a new world view, and so like Wade in the movie we are encouraged to try a new way, to follow this Galilean teacher to see where he leads us. And it turns out to lead into an upside-down kingdom, where the least are great, the rich are poor and the weak are strong.
And I’m very grateful for that, we are not invited to follow him because we are special for strong, but because he is, and there is room for us in his upside-down kingdom of kindness, respect, trust and dignity.

If you've appreciated this, why not...

Fantastic article Dave. I love the way you are so good at outlining the film and then connecting it to the gospel. It’s brief, succinct and faithful to God’s Word. Keep up the good work!
