Film Friday In the film The Sheep Detectives shepherd George cares for his sheep. He knows all their names and only keeps them for their wool, rather than slaughtering them. And every night he reads them the next chapter of a whodunnit. What he doesn’t realise is that the sheep can talk to each other and they understand his every word. When something happens to George the sheep get on the case and do their best to solve the mystery.
The Bible is big on describing us as being like sheep, and like George’s sheep we can be smart, but also clumsy, confused and heartbroken. Jesus famously told his tale in Luke 15 of the good shepherd who searches high and low for his lost sheep, and exuberantly celebrates when they are rescued. Jesus also assures us that he knows your name and mine, understanding us and caring for us deeply.
At one point in the film a rival shepherd points out that without a shepherd, the sheep run amok. And that reminded me of that moment in Matthew 9 v 36, when Jesus looked at the people and was sincerely moved because they were like sheep without a shepherd. Jesus is a shepherd who is not in it for himself, like the bad shepherds, but is totally here for his sheep. Wholehearted and sacrificially caring. He has given everything for us.
