I set off walking strong that day,
Came to a crossroads, took the wider way,
Was looking for something, solid ground,
A better life than the one I’d found.
I came across a glistening tree,
Fruit so ripe I could taste it already,
A women appeared as I stood and stared,
Shook her head and said, ‘Don’t you dare…
I’ve tried that fruit, it’ll break you in two,
Delicious for a second, it’ll then hurt you.
Trust me, I know what I’m talking about,
As good as it seems, it’ll hollow you out.’
So I turned and walked on, feeling small,
Glad for the rescue, but weaker than before.
I came across a small town fare,
Where a crowd had gathered to worship there.
They were making a tower, piling things high,
Clothes, phones, goods, reaching up to the sky.
Music played and the dancing spread,
Then a man appeared, shaking his head.
Said, ‘There’s nothing here for you today.
This tower will tumble. It’ll all fade away.
These things weren’t made to be served and adored,
Treasures like this leave you hungry and bored.’
I went on and a woman cried out,
‘I have so much to be bitter about.’
She stood in my way wouldn’t let me by,
Sobbed, ‘Life is a heartless, anguished cry.
The beating of the past is a painful drum.
Don’t hope for anything better to come.’
But as I watched another woman came by,
Wiped the tears from the older one’s eye.
Led her away towards the sun,
And so I continued to journey on.
The day grew long and my steps grew small,
I wondered if I’d find life at all.
Then against the clouds of a brooding sky,
I glimpsed a figure lifted high.
Weak and wounded, he looked that day,
And I found I couldn’t turn away.
I thought about the fruit and the tower at the fare,
And the woman of bitterness I’d met back there.
And the more I watched and the closer I came,
The more it seemed there was hope to gain.
I spotted glimmers of treasure on the way,
Started to dig and it took all day.
Each tiny jewel was worth the strife,
Like mustard seeds on the road to life.
And as I walked the road grew tough,
But I couldn’t stop, I couldn’t give up.
Each step towards this life’s new shore,
Took me further from who I was before,
And I’m still going now, though I often fall,
My eyes on the finest prize of all.
