Film Friday Three sisters, naval office Katherine, movie star Victoria and nurse Georgina, come home for the third wedding of their mother Diana. However, they all carry a sense of loss about their mother’s previous two husbands who died when they were all young. The daughters idolised their respective fathers and there is much beneath the service which starts to come to light. In a telling scene their mother tells all three that their fathers were not at all perfect. Diana loved them dearly but they had their flaws.
Family life can be tricky, for some it’s wonderful and straightforward, but for many it can be fraught with struggles. In the book of 1 Samuel 1 V 6, Hannah was taunted by her sister-in-law Penninah, in Genesis 37 v 26-28 Joseph was abandoned and sold by his brothers, and even Jesus had family troubles.
As his ministry progressed Jesus’s mother and siblings did not understand what he was doing, and we are told in Mark 3 v 21 that they wanted to take him away from his popular ministry because they thought he was going over the top. They feared that it was all becoming too zealous, too fanatical. At times those closest to us can misunderstand us, and if you struggle with difficulties with close friends or family Jesus understands that. He has been there, and we can tell him all about it. In a surprising moment in Mark 3 v 35 Jesus tells us that anyone who follows him and learns from him is a member of his family. You and I are part of a global family today – with 2 billion brothers and sisters.
